Valerie Singleton of Blue Peter
At 5.5
Variety is what Valerie Singleton wants most in her work. With Blue Peter she finds it. Once she flew to Africa for a day to do an item, another time she very nearly went to Bangkok, and not so long ago she took a day trip to Boulogne where the local newspaper described her (accurately) as 'une jeune et jolie personne de 27 ans.' 'It's the unexpectedness of it that I like,' she says, 'I can't bear things to be the same every day.' She would not like to be just an announcer as she was before she joined Blue Peter in September, 1962.
Since coming to work on Blue Peter Valerie has made many friends among children. 'As a matter of fact I didn't know many children before,' she admits. But she has always had wide interests, and she finds that many of them-like riding, yachting, and skiing-come into her reports for the programme. She loves making things - this week she shows you how to make some warm winter mittens - and she is very fond of animals, especially Jason and Petra.
Originally she trained as an actress. RADA and Rep. were followed by parts in television plays and serials, and in advertising films. Then came a successful audition for an announcer's job - and an awkward decision: acting or announcing? 'Perhaps acting has gone for good now. Certainly I hankered after it for a long time,' she admits. But she likes Blue Peter, and the programme's large audience evidently likes her.
