Since the end of the war many Universities in Great Britain have established departments of social medicine in their medical schools. Professor McKeown considers some of the difficulties that distinguish medical enquiry from other fields of biological research, and suggests ways in which investigations in social medicine may be expected to contribute to the solution of these problems.
