Part 1
Edouard Lalo, best known for his Symphonic Espagnole, was a French composer of Spanish descent, for whose music both Debussy and Dukas had a warm admiration. His Symphony in G minor, a delightfully fresh and engaging work, was first performed in Paris in 1887. Jeux was produced in Paris by Diaghilev in 1913, with choreography by Nijinsky. It represented young people playing tennis in a garden at dusk. searching for a lost ball, then making love and quarrelling. For it, Debussy wrote graceful and delicate music, harmonically daring; suggesting the alert movements of the tennis players with ' their back-hand strokes, their volleys and half-volleys.'
