The Musical Memoirs of Miss Lavinia Dowsett formed a series of programmes in which listeners heard excerpts from the diary of a young lady of the nineteenth century. The series ran for six programmes, but, as the idea proved popular, it was decided to have a new series sponsored by the daughter of the original Lavinia.
As it is important to know the year in which Lavinia Junior began to keep her diary, the editor, David Kean , explains that, allowing for the births of Edward, Charles, and Adolphus, Lavinia Junior arrived circa 1840. Evidence shows that the young Lavinia began to write on the eve of her twenty-first birthday.
