The idea of building a bridge over the great Gorge of the Avon had long been present in the minds of Bristolians of the eighteenth century, when William Vick , a wine merchant belonging to the Society of the Merchant Venturers, left one thousand pounds to accumulate to that end. After many false starts, the foundation stone was laid exactly a hundred years ago today, but it was not until December 8, 1864, that the bridge was officially opened. Besides telling the story of the building of the bridge, it is hoped tonight to be able to bring again to the microphone Mrs. Mary Griffiths , the first member of the public to cross the bridge.
