Mair Howells was born at Dolgelley, Merioneth. She graduated at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. Afterwards, she took a post at the County School, Llangefni, Anglesey, and later she became senior mistress and music mistress there.
She has sung publicly since she was a very young child. As a pupil at Dr. Williams' School, Dolgelley, she and her sister gave a lecture-recital on Welsh Folklore and Folk-songs, and since then she has given several lecture-recitals of her own. She has sung for the Welsh Folk Song Society at one of their annual meetings.
