The National Mod of An Comunn Gaidhealach (The Highland Association) came into existence in Oban forty-six years ago. It was instituted by a few enthusiasts in an effort to fan the diminishing flame of Gaelic sentiment and culture and since then the movement has made marked progress. Some indication of this may be given when one recalls that in the first year of the competition, up to a few days before the actual date, the number of competitors who had submitted their names could be numbered on the fingers of one hand. Today entries are numerous and various.
One feature of the Mod is it social life. The day's work over, competitors and visitors pass the evenings at those famous social gatherings of the Highlands known as ' ceilidhs '. There are no invitations, no set mode of procedure, and no social distinctions at these ceilidhs. A duke may sit next to a humble crofter-and on the floor at that. Anyone may be called upon to contribute to the evening's entertainment and nobody ever refuses to assist, whether they are prizewinners such as may be heard in tonight's broadcast or less accomplished folk.
