To mark the anniversary of the battle of Culloden, this evening there will be a recital on pipes that were picked up during the Jacobite retreat from the battlefield. They have been made available by courtesy of the West Highland Museum.
The Culloden pipes to be played have been in the possession of the family of William MacGillivray , Eoligarry, Barra, during the past one hundred years. They were brought to the Island by Roderick MacLennan , a noted piper of his day, who was an uncle of the present MacGillivray of Eoligarry. MacLennan received them from .a retired sea captain, a relation of whose father fought at Culloden and picked them up as a retreat was made from the battlefield.
It is interesting that tonight, the 192nd anniversary of Culloden, the pipes will sound the notes of the pibroch, 'Thainig mo Righ air Tir am Muideart' ('My King has Landed at Moidart ')*, which was composed at the time by John Mclntyre , a celebrated Rannoch piper, to commemorate the landing of Prince Charlie.
