Handel's oratorio Samson was composed next after Messiah. It was written at great speed in a few weeks, in almost as incredibly short a time as Messiah had taken the composer to complete. Indeed, eleven weeks in all are said to have sufficed to pen these two examples of the most massive and outstanding masterpieces in all the choral repertory. 
When Handel returned from Dublin, where he had produced Messiah in 1742, his popularity, which before had been slightly under a cloud, was ready to Hare up again. 
News of his success in Dublin had reached London, and the time was ripe for him to stir the town with a new work. Messiah for the moment was impossible : he could not risk the opposition of the Church. So he produced Samson at 'Covent Garden in February, 1743. On the first night its success was not marked, but on the second the King came to hear it, and thereafter it stood its ground, was sung eight times in a very short time, and succeeded both as an attraction and as a money-maker.
