The Music from Handel
Selected and arranged by J. MICHAEL DIACK
Chorus of peasants and soldiers
THE SCOTTISH WIRELESS SINGERS and THE NEW LIGHT ORCHESTRA
Conducted by IAN WHYTE
The music of The Village Opera, originally called The Dear Saxon, consists of solos and choruses selected from Handel's lesser-known operas and oratorios. The story runs briefly as follows: Strephon and Corydon are both in love with Phyllida. The villagers gather to hear her decision as to which of the two she will marry.
Phyllida is unable to decide, so it is suggested that Strephon and Corydon should compete in a song contest. The judges are unable to agree on the winner, so Phyllida disguises herself as an old woman and the villagers think she is bewitched. Amusing situations arise and finally everything is straightened out and Corydon wins Phyllida.
J. Michael Diack, who is responsible for the arrangement of this operetta, is a well-known Glasgow musician and London publisher. For many years he was a professor at the Æthenæum and conductor of the Glasgow Bach Choir, which he founded.
