An Appeal on behalf of The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh

The history of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh begins in 1729, when it was opened at the top of Robertson's Close by members of the College of Physicians of Edinburgh as a dispensary and an infirmary, with six beds. During the first year of its existence patients came from places as distant as Caithness and the Isle of Mull. The fame of its surgeons and physicians spread, while today their roll is enriched by names like Lister, and Simpson. Joseph Bell, one of the surgeons, was the original of Sherlock Holmes. The infirmary is by far the largest voluntary hospital in Britain and an effort is now being made to increase the accommodation by 126 beds. During the past twelve months over 20,000 in-patients and 70,000 outpatients have received treatment. The medical staff consists of 150 and there are over 450 sisters and nurses. The cost of upkeep is immense, averaging close on Â£200,000 a year.
