This Society was instituted in 1870. M. D. Mehul , a nephew of the well-known French composer, Etienne Nicolas Mehul , was the first conductor and remained with the Society until 1873. In 1874 Signor (now Commendatore) Ladislao Zavertal was appointed conductor, a position which he held until 1881, when he went to Woolwich to conduct the band and orchestra of the Royal Artillery. The Society has been under the direction of the present conductor, Mr. J. Peebles Conn , since 1922. Mr. Conn has been 
Deputy-Leader of the Scottish Orchestra, and teaches in the Scottish National Academy of Music. He conducts the Dunfermline Amateur Orchestra, the Dunfermline Choral Union, and the Greenock Orchestral Society. The Glasgow Amateur Orchestral Society has ninety players and is in the fortunate position of requiring no professional assistance, being complete in all sections of wood-wind, brass, and percussion.
