A Gaelic church was founded in Edinburgh in 1769 to minister to Gaelic-speaking soldiers in Edinburgh Castle, and also to Highlanders who came to the city to supply the labour market after the 1745 rising. The present church was built in 1851, when the late Dr. McLauchlan was minister, and St. Columba's has been a centre for Gaelic-speaking Highlanders ever since.
There has not been the same number of Gaelic speakers coming to Edinburgh in recent years and, in consequence, the Gaelic-speaking section has decreased to approximately a quarter of the number of members and adherents. The services have been altered to meet the wishes of the differently composed congregation, the morning and evening ones being conducted in English and the afternoon one in Gaelic
