The Knightswood Brass Band was formed by miners jn 1877, when Knightswood was a mining district. When the pits were worked out the small community had to find other work, and as a result financial and personal worries harassed the Band and hindered its development. On the outbreak of war in 1914, almost the entire personnel enlisted. Knightswood village was taken over by Glasgow in 1912, and now in the place of pits there is one of the largest garden cities in Scotland. The Band has made remarkable progress since 1931 and its ambition is to secure a permanent place among the foremost bands of the country. 
Gordon Stephen first came to the microphone three years ago and is well-known on concert platforms. He writes most of his songs and readings himself. As a member of the Glasgow Pantheon Club he played comedy parts in The Arcadians, High Jinks, The Quaker Girl, The Toreador, and The Dancing Mistress.
