Thomas the Rhymer, or Thomas of Ercidoune, is regarded by many as the morning star of Scottish song.
He nourished during the reign of Alexander III , and the principal work ascribed to him is the poetical romance of Tristrem, but his fame rests chiefly on his rhyming prophecies.
John Barbour , who died about 100 years later, was the first great Scottish noet and wrote an epic poem, The
Bruce'- Henry the Minstrel wrote a long poem dealing with the life of Sir William Wallace , but his poetry is inferior to that of Barbour.
