PIATIGORSKY (violoncello)
THE LIVERPOOL
PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Leader, ALFRED BARKER
Conducted by ALBERT COATES
Part 2 Gregor Piatigorsky was born thirty-three years ago at Ekaterinoslav,
Russia. He studied first the violin and then the 'cello at Moscow Conservatoire ; his progress was so extraordinary that at the age of fifteen he had risen to the rank of first 'cellist of the Imperial Opera in. Moscow. A year or two later he was in Berlin competing for the post of first 'cellist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Furtwangler. He secured this post which was a remarkable achievement for a youth of twenty. It was not long, however, before he decided to devote himself entirely to solo work, and since that time he has appeared with almost every orchestra of distinction in Europe and America.
