Born in 1905, Shostakovitch is one of the most brilliant young members of the so-called Leningrad group, musical descendants of the school of Rimsky-Korsakov. He already has three symphonies to his credit, as well as other orchestral and chamber music, and an opera founded on Gogol's story, ' The Nose '. And it may commend him to dance-tune enthusiasts to learn that he has made a clever orchestration of ' Tea for Two which he calls Tahiti Trot'.  
Shostakovich's youthful symphony is an attractive piece of work, very fresh and muscular and alert. In his mental vigour and contempt for sentiment he reminds one of the youthful Richard Strauss. He does not disdain a good straightforward tune— witness the very hefty one in the middle of the last movement. But Shostakovich's early works are more remarkable for nervous energy than for passionate emotion. Both his themes and his treatment of them are full of ' kick and his orchestration is attractively hard and glittering.
