Ibsen's poem Peer Gynt was written in 1867. It was intended to be, firstly, a poetic phantasy and, secondly, a satire on Norwegian life, but it also contains, as the author tells us, ' much that is reminiscent of my own youth ; for Aase, my mother-with necessary exaggerations-served as a model '. At the same time ' Peer Gynt is a real person, who lived in Gudrandsdal probably at the end of the last, or the beginning of this century ... but of his exploits not much more is known than is to be found in Asbjornsen's Fairy Tales. Thus I have not had very much to build upon, but that has left me so much more liberty '. 
In 1874 Ibsen wrote to Grieg asking him to compose incidental music for a dramatised version of the Peer Gynt poem. Grieg readily accepted Ibsen's offer, and the drama with Grieg's music was first performed with great success at the Christiana Theatre on February 24, 1876-six months before the first Wagner Festival at Bayreuth. 
Grieg's music to Peer Gynt is one of the most successful examples of theatre music fbr it underlines with extraordinary pictorial vividness and emotional expressiveness those dramatic climaxes and poetic moods of the drama that seem to demand a musical background. Furthermore, a good proportion of the twenty-three vocal and instrumental numbers remain complete little tone poems when taken away from their histrionic associations. The most important of these are the eight numbers selected by Grieg himself, to form two concert orchestral suites, the separate pieces of which, however, do not follow in order of their appearance during the play.
