A Canine Cavalcade
Devised by JOYCE LUSTGARTEN and produced by AUBREY HERBERT on the Anniversary of the mediæval festival of 'Dog Whip Day'
Centuries ago, a 'dog straying through the streets of a city chanced to enter a church, and make off with a piece of the Holy Wafer. By way of revenge upon the whole tribe, the Elders of that and other cities instituted the festival of 'Dog Whip Day'. Upon each October 18 - save only in Hull, where the ceremony was observed upon October 11th - the young men ran through the streets of their city armed with whips, thrashing and cudgelling every dog they set eyes upon.
