VARIETY comes tonight from the Argyle, Birkenhead, one of the few privately-owned music-halls in the country, which has, moreover, been in the hands of one family ever since its foundation in 1868. The original theatre was surrounded by fields and waste land, later to develop into a busy and densely-populated district. ' The Cedas Troupe of Minstrels; John Barnum , the great comic; Miss M. Astropp , talented bravure vocalist ; and the Hondra Brothers, classical gymnasts '. This is a selection from the Argyle's bill on its opening night, nearly seventy years ago. The prices of admission were then, curiously enough, the same as they are today. Shakespeare, too, was played there when, for a short period during the 'seventies, the hall became the Prince of Wales Theatre. Today many of the stars of the variety profession still look to the Argyle to bring them luck.
