(pianoforte) THE TERM ' BITTER-SWEET ' has been applied to Beethoven's Second Symphony. The composer was thirty-two at the time he wrote it, and it was from that year that he began to sense the approach of his ultimate deafness and other physical suffering. 
He was, however, in love with the Countess Guilietta Guicciardi, and although this was a hopeless passion, it seems to have sweetened his life. The dual feeling, therefore, in this symphony may be reasonably explained by these circumstances. Nevertheless the appeal of the Second Symphony has always been exceedingly strong, particularly with those who come fresh to the knowledge of Beethoven. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, when the Pianoforte Concerto had its first performance in England at a Promenade Concert, Delius was practically unknown here, and it was still to be many years before he found the recognition that his friends claimed for him. Sir Thomas Beecham's presentation of the opera, A Village Romeo and Juliet, marked the beginning of his popularity. Delius was then about fifty. This work is in the three orthodox movements, but between the first and second movements there is scarcely a break, while the second runs right into the third. The music is earlier Delius with a brilliant pianoforte part and strongly suggestive of the influence of Liszt.
