Physiology and poetry may not seem to be kindred pursuits, but John Irvine successfully combines them both. Attached to the physiological laboratory at Queen's University, Belfast, his spare time is devoted to writing poetry, and his lifelong ambition was fulfilled when Roger Quilter first set some of his (Irvine's) lyrics to music. He had long looked on both Quilter and Armstrong Gibbs as the ideal British lyric composers.
Armstrong Gibbs considers that the best of his recent work has been done in connection with Irvine's poetry. Tonight listeners will hear a programme of Irvine's poetry read by Beatrice Hurwitz , and four of his lyrics set to music by Armstrong Gibbs sung by Graham Craig.
