La Traviata, one of Verdi's most popular operas, was a failure on its first performance. Verdi accepted this with .an air of humility and resignation. In a letter to his amanuensis he wrote: 'La Traviata last night a fiasco. Is the fault mine or the singers'? Time will show.'

The libretto of La Traviata is based on Dumas Fils's La Dame aux camelias.
