'In the Steppes of Central Asia'.  
Borodin's ' In the Steppes of Central Asia ' was originally written as a musical background to one of a series of historical tableaux vivants shown during the celebrations of the silver jubilee of the Tsar Alexander II, in 1880. The music illustrates the following scene : ' The silence of the sandy steppes of Central Asia is interrupted by the first sounds of a peaceful Russian song. Then the melancholy refrain of an Oriental song is heard, and with it the tramp of horses and camels. A caravan escorted by Russian soldiers is crossing the immense desert, fearlessly continuing its long journey under the protection of the Russian troops. The caravan proceeds on its way. The songs of the Russians and those of the Asiatics gradually blend together in the same harmony ; their refrains are heard for some time and finally die away in the distance.' 
Italian Composer of Shakesptare Songs. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was born at Florence in 1895, and studied under the famous Italian composer Ildebrando Pizzetti. He has composed a considerable amount of music, chiefly choral and vocal. Among the latter is a series of Shakespeare songs, set to the original English words.

The Week's Good Cause

An appeal on behalf of THE BELFAST GIRLS' CLUB UNION HOLIDAY HOUSB, by ANASTASIA MCCREADY 
Tonight's appeal by Miss AnastasS McCready , the Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer of the Belfast Girls' Club Union, is for a special branch of a cause that has done noble work in Northern Ireland. The Belfast Girls' Club Union helps the working girls of Belfast to develop their latent talents and find wholesome occupation in their ieisure time. The Union organises clubs in working-class districts and seeks to provide healthy interests for its members. There are forty affiliated clubs. Tonight's appeal is for a holiday house run in connection with the Union at Carnlough, where members of these affiliated clubs and their friends can have an inexpensive holiday.
