Thurot, the hero (or villain) of this programme, landed a French force at Carrickfergus on February 21, 1760. Ten days later his body was washed ashore on the coast of Galloway. He was an experienced smuggler of Irish descent and his fleet was popularly supposed at the time to have been equipped by Madame Pompadour and ' some ladies of the first quality' in France. 1
This programme is the first of a new scries of reconstructions of historic events in Northern Ireland.
