' Shop-keeping and Catering '
A discussion between P. Sargant Florence and George Rutherford
George Rutherford was employed in the drapery trade as an assistant for ten years, and spent another five years as manager of a department store. He left the distributive trade to take up the position of organiser for the Shop Assistants' Union at Newcastle-on-Tyne, and was responsible for much good work in the counties of Durham and Northumberland.
In 1928 he was promoted to divisional officer of the Midlands, an area that stretches from Hereford to Skegness and from Chesterfield to Bedford. In this area he is concerned with the negotiations that take place between the employer and employees. He is thus continually in touch with the problems affecting shop life.
Another qualification of Mr.
Rutherford is the fact that he is the workers' representative on the Wholesale Costume and Mantle Trade Board. He also represents his Union on the National Trade Union Committee for the Drug and Fine Chemical Industry.
