The composer, whose desire for anonymity we must respect, writes thus of his own work:
'The work is so called because its form in broad outline conforms to that of the syllogism. It is in three clearly-defined sections, of which the first two set forth two groups of thematic material which are brought together and combined in the third. The first is Allegro ma non troppo, preceded by a short introductory Presto; the second is Andante; and the third is again the Allegro with, later, the Andante thematic material superimposed upon it. The title is also appropriate in that the entire structure of the work is strictly logical. The texture is contrapuntal throughout; there are no "filling up" parts and there is not a bar that is not thematic in origin.
Similarly, it could be shown that the very key of the work, E flat minor, is rigorously dictated by the nature of the thematic material. But while the form and structure are logical, the actual stuff of the music is deeply emotional, romantic, and even dramatic.'
