PATTISON'S SALON ORCHESTRA
Under the direction of NORRIS STANLEY
From THE CAFÉ RESTAURANT, BIRMINGHAM
EUGENE SCRIBE, the French dramatist, who
* functioned about a century ago, worked on an organized and unashamed plan of group collaboration. He employed various men to furnish him with plots, jokes, and dialogues. Scribe himself joined up the pieces, shaped them to a design, varnished the whole work with a brilliance which was all his own, and put his name to the finished article. He was the idol of the Parisian stage to which, over thirty years, he contributed many hundreds of works of all kinds. Most of the libretti of Auber's operas are by Scribe, and Auber was as fortunate in his librettist as was Sullivan in a later day. The Bronze Home, on a Chinese subject, is one of the most 'popular examples of this happy collaboration.
ALTHOUGH Max Bruch died only ten years ago, his work would be little remembered were it not for the two violin concertos and the famous violoncello solo, Kol Nidrel. This one, in G minor, is the earlier and more popular, and as a concerto beloved, by virtuosos is high up in the violin repertory. Bruch spent three years in England, from 1880 to 1883, as conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society.
