by a Fenland Doctor
The speaker in this broadcast is a doctor who lives in the very heart of the Fens, in a countryside much of which lies below sea level and across whose heavy black soil rivers run through raised embankments. Metalled roads are few and far between, and marry of the houses are scattered along narrow tracks known as ' droves '. In summer these consist of pot-holes and dust, and in winter they are veritable morasses of mud. It is with such communications that a Fenland doctor has to visit his patients.
