Tchaikovsky wrote this concerto for Nicholas Rubinstein , the brother of Anton. Nicholas Rubinstein appears to have taken Tchaikovsky under his wing, and during the composition of the concerto rather expected Tchaikovsky to ask his advice on the lay-out of the piano part. Nothing of the sort happened, so that when Rubinstein was presented with the finished manuscript, he abused it mercilessly. Cruelly hurt, Tchaikovsky altered the dedication from Rubinstein to von Bulow, who thought very highly of it and at once put the work into his repertoire.
