In the hands of Sigurd Rascher the saxophone enters the lists in company with the recognised equipment of accepted virtuosi, and becomes a most effective and sympathetic medium for rendering serious music as though to the manner born.
As a matter of fact, the saxophone has a most respectable pedigree, and the dance band has a moral claim on its services no greater than had Fagin on Oliver Twist's. Tonight listeners will hear Sigurd Rascher demonstrating how intelligent an instrument is the saxophone in the right hands, and how beautifully it can be taught to speak.

1. Introduction, Entry of the Clans; 2. Scottish Idyll; 3. Gypsy Dance; 4. Gigue and Finale

Saint-Saens' opera on the subject of Henry VIII centres round the King and Anne Boleyn. The Ballet, that inevitable feature of a French opera, is part of the wedding festivities, and this concert arrangement consists of four movements. The first is called 'Entry of the Clans', and is intended to have a Scottish character. It begins with a tune with something of a Scots lilt and there follows a march theme that oboes and trumpets play first, the whole orchestra taking it up later.
The second movement is also Scottish in character. Strings, with the woodwind responding, begin it and then the oboe plays a tune meant to be reminiscent of the bagpipes, with the harp and 'cellos imitating the drone.
The third movement is a vivacious gypsy dance. The drum here is prominent with a rhythmic figure, and the boisterous dance tune is presented first by the violins and cor anglais.
Only in the last movement is there the suggestion of England that the name of the opera would lead one to expect. It is a Jig in which violins and then woodwind play the merry tune. The Suite comes to an end with a really exhilarating Finale.

A Pianoforte Recital

A Russian by birth, and a student of Petrograd Conservatoire, where he carried off all the chief prizes, Pouishnoff is one of those artists whom London has succeeded in keeping for a good many years. He first appeared in this country at the Wigmore Hall in 1921, and since then has been regularly heard almost every season. 
As a pianist, he is in sympathy with music of all periods. In addition, he has composed a number of short works for the piano, and those included in this programme are a good example of his style.
