Leader, FRANK THOMAS
Johan Strauss the younger was the most celebrated of the distinguished family of dance-music composers. For nearly the whole of the nineteenth century the Strauss family were the undoubted kings of the dance-music world. ' The Roses of the South ' waltz is the younger Strauss's Opus 388 and is composed on themes from pne of his operettas.
When Sir Nigel Playfair staged Sheridan's The Duenna at the Lyric Theatre,
Hammersmith, in the palmy days of his great Hammersmith adventure, he naturally relied on his Musical Director, Alfred Revnolds , to see to the musical side of the production. The making of incidental music is related as much to craft as to art, and of the few musicians that can do it really well, and are both good artists and thoroughly competent craftsmen, Alfred Reynolds is high in the list.
