Promenade audiences have shown so real an affection for Arthur de Greef that a season of Proms, or even a first night, would seem. incomplete without him. He was born in Louvain, Belgium, in 1862, studied under Liszt, has toured all Europe a score of times, and has found himself on the platform at Queen's Hall season after season with gratifying regularity. He was a personal friend of Grieg, specializes in his compositions, and is well known for his Grieg recitals. Two at least of his own compositions, one a pianoforte concerto, have been produced at the Queen's Hall Promenades under Sir Henry Wood.

Ben Davies was 74 early this year, and he belongs to the company of those very few who have retained their powers of singing beyond that prime of life after which in the case of the average singer it declines. Sir Charles Santley was one who was still singing beautifully in his 80's. Sir Geoige Henschel , who was 82 this year, still sings far better than many of his juniors; Victor Maurel , the Frenchman, was another veteran who retained his voice; but ;the list of such men is not a long one. The secret of thus preserving the voice appears to lie in a certain technical use of it. This was the secret imparted to all his pupils by Jean de Reske , who was himself taught by the singing masters cf the Italian bel canto. The most famous exponent of that unrivalled method was that grand old man of singing, Manuel Garcia , who was teaching almost to the day of his death, at the age of 101.
