Ernest John Moeran , born in 1894, has spent much of his life in Norfolk, and, as an enthusiastic collector of folk-songs, has rescued a large number of East Anglian folk-songs from oblivion. He began to compose while he was still at TJppingham, and first attracted serious notice with a concert of his own works in 1923. Since then he has more than confirmed the impressions his thoroughly English music then made.
Francis Poulenc , who is still in his early thirties, is regarded as one of the most brilliant of the post-war French school. In his music he favours the fantastic, and in many of his early works he has even been charged with a suggestion of vulgarity. This, however, has proved rather to be the exuberance that is so marked and so refreshing a feature of much reallv modern music, of which Poulene is one of the declared champions.
