ROSSINI followed up his irresistible comedy of The Barber of Seville with a tragedy founded upon Shakespeare's Othello, and disconcerted the Italians completely. They did not at all like the sombre ending, which was far too violent for their taste; one has to bear in mind that the slaughter-house type of opera in which all last acts are ciimson-hued was a far later nineteen! century product. So Othello was given in Rome with a happy ending. Even then it did not altogether please, and Rossini planned another comic opera, on the subject of Cinderella. He imposed, however, certain conditions. There was to be practically no fairy stuff-nothing to provoke the use of the inadequate stage machinery of the time which Rossini had already learnt thoroughly to distrust. La Cenerentola, or Cinderella, as we say, was put on at Rome during the carnival in 1817, and was a great success. The music is delicious, even though much of it was borrowed from earlier and totally different operas, as was the indolent Rossini's custom. It was performed in London in 1820 and again in 1891, but for some reason it has never got into the repertory.
