Hindemith's Neues vom Tage (News of the Day) appeared only in 1929. The story is the gayest and most inconsequent nonsense, poking fun in a real spirit of farce, at the restless conditions of modern life. The Overture begins with a brisk hurrying figure, above which we soon hear a broader melody, and then there is a quieter section with a flowing theme above a brisk staccato accompaniment. That leads to a gracious triple measure, again with a rhythmic accompaniment; the speed of the opening returns. The last part is taken from one of the dances in the final scene of the little opera - a theatre in which the two chief personages are earning ridiculously large fees by transferring to the stage the drama of their own matrimonial difficulties. The orchestra required is an unusual one ; in addition to the usual wood winds, there are an E Flat clarinet and an Alto saxophone.
Two pianofortes are needed also. one of them for two players, and besides a big array of percussion instruments (including three electric bells), there are parts for mandoline and banjo. Tho overture was broadcast by the B.B.C. in November last year.
Arthur Honegger, born in France in 1892, of Swiss parentage, is counted as belonging to the modern French school, of which he is one of the most interesting and original figures. In spite of dissonances which are apt to strike the older listener as harsh and, at times, needlessly painful, Honegger's music based on the old classical forms, and verges occasionally on scholastic pedantry. It is full of life and colour, and has a robust strength of its own which contrasts strongly with the somewhat light and airy fabric of much modern French music.
His Symphonic Poem, Pacific 231, aroused considerable interest when it was first heard in this country, at one of the Promenade Concerts. The subject, an unusual one for musical illustration, is a railway engine of the type known as Pacific, the largest type at present in use in this country.
It might be thought to be neither possible nor permissible to describe such a subject in terms of music or even of mere noise, but Mr. Honegger contrives to adapt the orchestral resources with vividly descriptive effect.
EARLY in his career Sibelius, looking round Europe for a peg on which to hang his inspiration, found none so suitable as the unoccupied one at hand in his native Finland. As a consequence his music has a personality and a national tang that distinguishes it from many others, either classical or modern. It is the kind of music that one likes very much or likes not at all. It is music that is cultured without being cold, too democratic to be subservient to any school, and planted so deeply in the soil as to have its roots in earth common to every nation. Sibelius is held by some to be the greatest living composer, and in Finland, whose Government has granted him an annual income as to a national hero, he is regarded with the veneration that only a highly cultured people can feel towards an artist. The symphony to be heard tonight is the sixth of the seven he has so far written, and was first performed at the Queen's Hall, under Sir Henry Wood, in November, 1926.
