1: The Secular Christianity Debate
The argument continues between
PAUL VAN BUREN
Professor of Theology at
Temple University, Pennsylvania and RONALD GREGOR SMITH Professor of Divinity in the University of Glasgow
Introduced by DAVID EDWARDS
Dean of King's College, Cambridge Paul van Buren expounded his most radical views in The Secular Meaning of the Gospel, published in this country in 1963. Ronald
Gregor Smith sharply criticised van Buren's understanding of history and secularity-and his rejection of ' transcendence '—in a more recent book, Secular Christianity. In his dialogue, recorded partly in New York and partly in Glasgow, each returns to the attack.
