' The only time a criticism affected me painfully,' was Joseph Conrad 's comment on Henry James 's treatment of Chance in an article of 1914. Professor Watt examines the relationship between the two writers from 1896, when Conrad sent the Master a copiously dedicated copy of Outcast of the Islands, to the appearance of James's article in The Times Literary Supplement eighteen years later.
