This work was specially commissioned by the BBC as an experiment in the exploitation of stereophony for a radio opera. The story concerns a remote island whose inhabitants are evacuated to the mainland on Government orders as the island is required for military purposes. The theme is the conflict between the primitive puritanism of the islanders and the complex, corrupt mainland society.
