The Island
with Cleo Laine and Denis Quilley
A Jazz Opera
Music by William Russo
Words by Adrian Mitchell
The Russo Orchestra
Leader, Ron Simmonds
Conducted by The Composer
Assistant conductor, Richard Peaslee
Electronic sequences by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop
Produced by Douglas Cleverdon

This work was specially commissioned by the BBC as an experiment in the exploitation of stereophony for a radio opera. The story concerns a remote island whose inhabitants are evacuated to the mainland on Government orders as the island is required for military purposes. The theme is the conflict between the primitive puritanism of the islanders and the complex, corrupt mainland society.
