A weekly programme about work in the world of science
Rain Like Bullets by F. P. Bowden, C.B.E., F.R.S. of the Research Laboratory for the Physics and Chemistry of Solids,
University of Cambridge
When modern aircraft fly at very high speed through a rainstorm, the impact of the raindrops may be great enough to shatter the radar domes and damage the metal structure. Dr. Bowden speaks about some recent studies of this effect that have been made in his laboratory, and about other new problems that arise when travelling at speeds of a few thousand miles an hour.
