A weekly programme about work in the world of science
Tools or Brains: which came first? by Kenneth Oakley, D.sc, F.B.A. of the British Museum (Natural History)
The forgers of the Piltdown remains worked on the assumption that an enlarged brain had to precede the use of tools; but the recent discovery in Africa of good stone tools with the remains of creatures that had brains no bigger than chimpanzees' suggests that conceivably the opposite is true--in other words, that tool-using leads to brain enlargement. Dr. Oakley discusses the implications of this new concept.
