ALEXANDER GLAZOUNOV , like all composers who have risen to fame, is credited with having shown exceptional musical gifts at a very early age. In one respect, however, he differs from most others similarly gifted. His musical memory is uncanny ; ho has always been able to remember in the minutest detail, and even to write down after the performance, any piece of music he has happened to hear. He once completely reconstructed in this way .the overture to Borodin's opera Prince Igor. Glazounov was born in 1,865,-and at a very favourable time to come under the influence of the famous ' Five,' the founders of modern Russian music. He studied privately with Rimsky-Korsakov to such purpose that at the age of sixteen he had a symphony performed under Balakirev. After that, he won rapid appreciation, and Glazounov's artistic life has been one of increasing triumph; otherwise, it has been uneventful. In this country ho is known chiefly by two or three of the most Ipopular of the eight symphonies ho has written and the music to the ballets of The Seasons (from which this concert suite is taken), and Raymonde.

JOLANTHE will be fifty years old next Noyember. It was the seventh of the Savoy series of opera in order of production, and followed immediately upon the successful run of Patience, of which over 400 performances had been given. Indeed, all the Gilbert and Sullivan operas had phenomenally long runs, Iolanthe, for example, holding the Savoy stage for more than a year. Sullivan by this time was already a very popular public figure, although the best of the Savoy operas—The Mikado, The Yeomen of the Guard, and The Gondoliers-had not yet been writton. He had been for three years Director of the newly-founded Royal College of Music, he had recently succeeded Costa as conductor of Leeds Festival, and within a few months from the beginning of the lolanthe run he was to bo knighted.

' THE BOUND TABLE' is a comedy of inaction in a queer suburban household inhabited by a collection of hapless types, with whom conversation is a disease, decision a miracle, and definite action a breach of manners and morals. Daisy Drcnnan is forced by her own efficiency to ' 'mother' her hapless companions, who complacently allow her to manage their lives, but are outraged when she decides to marry and manage her own. Lennox Robinson has put all his power of characterization into the construction and dialogue of this brilliant play. The Round Table was first produced at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in 1922, and revived at the ' Q ' and the New Theatres, London, and at the Playhouse, Liverpool.
