by JOHN COATES (Tenor)
Modern English Love Songs
IT may be there is a generation old enough to have leamt to regard John Coates as a recital singer who inspires affection as readily as respect, but too young to realize what a fine stage record this great artist has to his credit. He began his career in the Carl Rosa Company as a baritone. Later, as a tenor, he sang in the production of Stanford's Much Ado About Nothing. Ho was with the Moody-Manners Company for a short time, and in Sir Thomas Beecham's season of 1910 he was principal tenor. Since then he has sung opera here and abroad, often in Wagnerian operas, of which Siegfried, Tristan and Lohengrin are his principal roles.
