MRS. (MARJORY) KENNEDY-
FRASER spent much time during her life in the islands of the Hebrides collecting the Gaelic folk-songs which had found their last, refuge there. Her musical life began at the age of twelve, when she travelled with her father on his singing tours, acting as his accompanist. After his death, she practically devoted herself to collecting, singing and making known the beautiful Hebridean songs which in the collections she published from time to time form her monument. She wrote the libretto for Sir Granville Bantock s opera The Seal Woman, the music of which was largely founded on melodies from her collections.

As every child knows, a book for children is a very different thing from a book about children, and the distinction is equally marked in music. Many composers, in attempting to catch the ears of the children, have merely titillated the emotions of their guardians, and while Bizet's music to this suite, for which a supplementary title is 'Children's Games,' is rather of the latter order, there is no question that Schumann's Scenes of Childhood is of the former. Of other children's suites, there are Elgar's 'Wand of Youth' and 'Nursery Suite,' Debussy's 'Children's Corner,' collections of pieces by Mussorgsky and, indeed, most of the Russians, and even one by Stravinsky. But children, particularly modern children, are not easy to catch. They will snap at tho most unlikely flies, while a composer may bait his hook with the utmost cunning and never get a bite.

In origin probably not one of these songs has anything to do with students. 'Yankee Doodle,' for one, has not. It was an old English country dance, printed as such and borrowed, as was the custom, by Dibdin and others to pad out their little hot-pot operettas, long before it went to America, and became nationalized. Nor has Lilli Berlero, the tune of which is attributed to Purcell. Apparently, it was originally a 'quickstep,' but an Irish Protestant, who, in 1687 had written some doggerel verses protesting against some Catholic appointment, saw its possibilities. The lilting tune and the silly verses quickly spread through the whole army and the entire population, to the extent of actually influencing politics. The words Lilli Berlero bullen-a-la have no meaning. They are just a jolly-sounding piece of nonsense.
