THE name 'Pilgrims' March,' commonly attached to the second movement of Mendelssohn's ' Italian' Symphony, was not chosen by the composer, but it appropriately expresses the feeling of the steady, sober and confident progress of its rhythm and melody.
Mendelssohn wrote his delicious ' Midsummer
Night's Dream ' Scherzo as a Prelude to tho Act in which Puck and Titania's fairy company play their gayest part.
SCHUMANN thought of writing a part for the Guitar in the Romance which forms the Second Movement of his so-called Fourth Symphony (it was really his second work in that form), but he changed his mind and wrote instead a plucked String accompaniment, which reproduces something of the Guitar effect.
The Movement is in three parts; in its middle section a decorated Violin melody is prominent.
