THE poignant sorrows which nssail the civil population of a country which is involved in a great war are vividly illustrated by the above play, founded upon an incident of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1. The sacrifice of youth in its fateful struggle is well remembered, but here is unfolded the story of how ago also suffered that France might live, and the ill success of the French armies of the North is reflected in the action of the play.
In a small cottage in rural France lived
Henri Loujanne and his wife, their nephew, Louis, being a soldier in General Michel's army.
Besides these, we are also introduced to Hélène, a young peasant girl, and Sergeant Bepler, a Prussian.
