Professor W.J. Gruffydd, Professor of Welsh at the University College, Cardiff, is one of the most intriguing personalities in Welsh life. As versatile as he is original, as deeply learned as he is fresh in outlook, as provocative as he is entertaining, he is the rare combination of the poet, the scholar, the editor and the ideal committee man who is a master of drafting resolutions. In 1904, he published, in conjunction with the late Selyn Roberts, a volume of verse which heralded and quickened the Welsh poetic movement of today. After about twenty years he published another volume of verse, 'Ynys yr Hud.' He has also published a learned edition of a branch of the Mabinogion, two histories of Welsh literature, and two admirable anthologies of Welsh poets.
