Scene I.
The day opens in the yard of the "Golden Eagle", Eastcheap. Two coaches are being made ready for the road.
In due course the Birmingham coach sets off to the merry tune of the guard's key-bugle.
"Our Ghost", who has decided to accompany the coach, now settles down to listen to the Guard's stories of the road.
Scene II.
At St. Albans one of the horses casts a shoe, and to minimize delay the "breakfast stop" is made in that city, instead of Redbourn, some five miles beyond.
At Towcester a stop is made for lunch. Some of the passengers from London leave the coach here, while fresh ones join it for Birmingham.
Scene III.
During the afternoon a good run is made, in spite of a thunder-storm, and the coach reaches Birmingham by 7 p.m.
At the hotel, a good dinner awaits the travellers, after which begins an impromptu concert.
Thus the day ends.
