Hans Christian Andersen all his life loved the theatre. As a youth he was an actor, singer ajid dancer by turns. During his whole literary career his ambition was to write a famous five-act tragedy, but to-day everyone knows and loves Andersen as the supreme writer of fairy stories and not as the great novelist and dramatist ho hoped posterity would acclaim him. The Operetta, " The Nightingale," is a version of his Chinese Tale of the Nightingale.
