TOBACCO was originally introduced to the Chinese in the fifteenth century by the Portuguese. The Chinese, who proverbially do everything contrariwise, ground the stems of the tobacco leaves into snuff. Chinese snuff and snuff bottles were introduced into Europe a husdred years later by the Dutch, who followed the Portuguese in the Far Eastern markets.
